The mission of Handong International Law School (HILS) is to train and equip law students to become Christian international lawyers who demonstrate professional excellence in their legal work in a manner that reflects the love of Jesus Christ. We are a Christian law school established to serve the church in Korea, the Asia-Pacific region, and beyond. This mission is pursued by the faculty, who are legal professionals, through the law school’s intensive and comprehensive curriculum to prepare students for the demands of the global practice of law. At the core, our desire is to produce lawyers who serve Christ as international lawyers around the world through intellectual and professional excellence; from a Biblical foundation; and as servant-leaders.
Intellectual and Professional Excellence
Tackling the complex issues which lawyers will need to address in the next generation will require the highest intellectual and professional skills. This commitment to excellence is driven not only by a sense of what will surround us, but by an understanding of a claim on us – a claim of divine origin. We are persuaded to summon all the gifts and skills that God has given us, and commit them to our life’s work – as citizens, spouses, parents, and legal professionals.
Biblical Foundation
"HILS draws on Biblical principles and unapologetically derives its vision from a conviction of Christ as Lord of all – including law."
The issues facing law in this millennium are simply too overwhelming to address without the reservoirs of moral and ethical teaching that have historically informed the law. HILS claims and cherishes that heritage, therefore HILS draws on Biblical principles and unapologetically derives its vision from a conviction of Christ as Lord of all – including law.
Servant Leadership
"Essentially, our desire for HILS graduates to be Christ-like in their work and calling as lawyers."
We are persuaded that the urgent need in the legal profession today is not only excellence and competence but also persons with a servant heart. No calling requires a servant’s heart and tenacity any greater than the call to “do justice.” In a world with massive injustice in both private and public arenas, there is a desperate need for those whose hearts are touched by a high calling and who seek careers whose rewards are for more enduring than personal wealth or status. The need is to rediscover the vision of lawyers who are not just litigators and drafters, but “counselors.” Essentially, our desire for HILS graduates is to be Christ-like in their work and calling as lawyers.
