Handong Global University, Hosting of the Next-generation Entrepreneurship Training program in Rwanda

Handong Global University (President Soon-heung Chang) as part of UNESCO UNITWIN hosted the “Next Generation Entrepreneurship Training” program at IPRC Gishari from the the 14th till the 16th and at the University of Rwanda from the 19th till the 23rd.​

 

The NGET Program was participated by six professors (Professors Bum-ha Jin, Meong-sul Do, Sang-hua Lee, Hae-gu Lee, Du-hee Jung, Young-sub Kim) from Handong Global University’s Departments of Management and Economics, Global Entrepreneurship and ICT, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, Life Science, etc., one coordinator, and 11 HGU student research assistants. This team of individuals helped educate 103 professors from IPRC Gishari and 123 (under-) graduate students from the University of Rwanda regarding theories of entrepreneurship, finance and marketing, business model development, technological convergence and business ethics, etc. Rwandan participants will plan a business item that can directly bolster social innovation and create a lean canvas as well as receive practical training through group activities centered around presentations comparing real business models, etc.​

 

The program’s head director, HGU’s Professor Bum-ha Jin, states that “the NGET program as a part of UNESCO UNITWIN is a concentrated educational program designed to promote the potential for the sustainable development of developing countries, helping to establish entrepreneurship, change mentalities and develop the potential for start-ups.” Professor Jin further expressed than “participants of this program will be able to grow their entrepreneurial reasoning skills, cultivate necessary knowledge as a future entrepreneur and learn about technology for the sustainable development of Rwanda."

South Korea’s Ambassador to Rwanda Eun-Joong Kim, who attended the opening ceremony of the NGET program, stated, “Handong Global University has for many years put in great effort for constant cooperation with the University of Rwanda, and as a result, the hosting of this meaningful NGET Program has come to fruition. I firmly believe that as an ambassador to Rwanda the global educational cooperation by both universities will further Rwanda’s innovation and progress.”

Moreover, James Gashumba, Vice Chancellor of IPRC Gishari, stated, “The education and technology provided by this program will not only be for us but also for the next generation; this program will play a significant role in realizing and solving social issues.Additionally, Philip Cotton, President of the University of Rwanda, stated, “Handong Global University has for the past 2 years given tremendous effort towards providing the University of Rwanda with practical assistance with customized start-up education and fostering entrepreneurship. We hope that this is not just a one-time program but that this will henceforth lead to a much more constructive cooperation for Rwanda’s economic development and innovation.”

Miremb Jean Diamur, a Department of Technology lecture at IPRC Gishari expressed, “It was great to learn about technology and information through this NGET program and how a future business can grow from a small business to a large one.” 

 

Last year, Handong Global University concluded an UNITWIN-cooperation MOU with the University of Rwanda for supporting the development of their business education process and vitalizing start-ups that are necessary for economic development in Rwanda. In January of last year, the National University of Rwanda and IPRC Gishari held special seminars for strengthening the potential of start-ups and developing their sustainability. Going forward, Handong Global University plans to continually strengthen its cooperation in order to strengthen Rwanda’s higher education potential, foster future leaders, etc.

* UNITWIN, University Twinning and Networking is a program created by UNESCO in 1992 for the purpose of educating developing nation’s universities, supporting their research institutes, reducing gaps in knowledge, and growing their ability for self-reliance through a network of universities from developed and developing nations. Handong Global University in 2007 became the first to be designated as a host university of UNITWIN.​

 

*The Handong Global University-UNITWIN service, which is part ofthe Ministry of Education’sODA service, by concluding agreements with universities from developing countries that are categorized by the World Bank as low-income countries and are the Korean government’s key-cooperating partners, has pursued the strengthening of the universities’ potential, fostering of leaders, local development, etc. and constructed local base centers within the developing countries. Handong Global University is currently supporting 62 universities and 16 institutions in 30 countries (as of Dec. 2018).
