On December 13th, Handong University(President Sun Heung Jan) held a conference in Indonesia Jarkata Mission of Republic of Korea to ASEAN(Ambassador Sungnam Lim) for a specific business of a follow-up measure of signing the MOU of business cooperation(Oct. 17, 2019) between 3 parties: Mission of Republic of Korea to ASEAN-Handong University- Sookmyung Women's University(President Jung Ae Kang).
From the conference, Korea ASEAN ambassador Sungnam Lim requested for the development of projects that is consistent with the direction of cooperation that was settled by the keynote of the South Korean government's New Southern Policy and "2019 Korea-ASEAN Special Summit. He also requested for the implementation of multilateral projects through the cooperation of ASEAN local NGOs, a project development that can genuinely give an impact on the locals, and hoped for the project, developed by Handong University and Sookmyeong University, to be applied.
As UNESCO UNITWIN leading university, Handong University have announced achievements and best examples of the implemented projects within the ASEAN countries over the past years. Henceforth, it also shared future cooperation and project plans with ASEAN countries with Mission of Republic of Korea to ASEAN. Handong University plans to strengthen the promotion of the development of entrepreneurship education courses, the secondary education competency and cultivate future talents in not only Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, etc. (current ASEAN countries) but also with Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines etc. from 2020.
Meanwhile, the consent was a follow-up on signing the MOU of business cooperation between 3 parties; Mission of Republic of Korea to ASEAN Ambassador Sungnam Lim, Handong University President Sun Heung Jan, Sookmyung Women's University President Jung Ae Kang, and 10 other participants from the 3 organization, in Seoul, Oct. 17th.
Through the Oct. 17th agreement, the 3 organizations decided to conduct joint research activities through the networks constructed by ASEAN universities and institutions, establish and operate start-up education centers in order to help ASEAN countries, open ASEAN entrepreneurship and start-up training programs, and collaborate on many areas; promote start-up businesses within ASEAN countries through the management of joint education programs. For these to be effectively achieved, all decided to constitute an ASEAN Start-up Education Council. UNITWIN (University Twinning and Networking) is a program established by UNESCO in 1992 as a goal to reduce the intellectual gap by supporting higher education and research organizations in developing countries through the networks of universities in both developed and developing countries, and also with a purpose to develop a self-reliance capacity for the developing countries. In 2007, Handong University was appointed as the very first South Korea’s UNITWIN college within Korea (Republic of Korea).
Other than this, Handong University was also selected as the first OECD Internship College within the country (2008), UN ACADEMIC IMPACT leading University (2011), a university that operates a UN depositary library (2014), leading university for UN NGO Conference (2016), and opened a Bangi-Mun Global Institution (2019), which all of these are pointing towards for globalization.
The ASEAN representative office was established in Jakarta in October 2012, where the ASEAN Secretariat Office is currently located. It strives by focusing on 3 areas: politics-security, economy, society- culture for the development and unification with not only our country but also with other ASEAN counties.
