In response to the prolonged COVID-19 outbreak, Handong Education Development Center (HEDC) of Handong Global University (President Soon-Heung Chang) is actively providing real-time online learning support programs to enhance the learning effect of students.
○ Providing tutoring programs · customized academic support · training teaching assistant (TA)
HEDC (Director Chung-Rok Pang) is providing three learning support programs through a real-time video lecture platform (Zoom). It is planned that these programs will continue until April, with the current progress of the online classes.
"Tutoring Program" helps students to build up basic knowledge and improve their academic self-efficacy during untact (non-face-to-face) online lecture period. Also, students can receive help throughout their studies including selection of major and academic help by each major through a program called "Customized Academic Support".
One student that is participating in the tutoring program said, “Since it’s the first semester, I have been struggling with my weak subjects. Through untact tutoring, I am getting a lot of help by understanding what I need to work on more.”
"Teaching Assistant Training Program" provides tips on supporting and preparing for online classes for teaching assistants (TA’s). This will help them to play the role of teaching assistant without difficulties during the online class period.
One student who participated in the program expressed high satisfaction, saying, "When I first took charge of the online class assistant, I was frustrated because I didn't know what to do. However, through real-time untact assistant training, I received a lot of practical help in supporting lectures or conducting TA Sessions.”
○ Planning additional online learning support programs… Expected to improve the quality of education
Handong Education Development Center is planning to implement programs such as the "Academic Portfolio Contest" and "Special Lecture on Learning Method for Freshmen" online. HEDC is expecting that such additional programs would help students to reflect on their study habits for enhancing their self-directed learning capabilities.
Accordingly, HEDC is working on a system that evaluates learning support programs and reflects feedback with student advisory groups. HEDC expects that the active operation of online learning support programs would improve the quality of education.
HEDC will continue supporting students to learn without any difficulties during online lectures through customized learning support programs.
President Soon-Heung Chang of Handong Global University have stressed that as technologies and artificial intelligence develop in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Handong students should be the leaders as the "first-mover". To develop teaching and learning methods in line with the changing of times, Handong Global University has actively introduced a new curriculum that utilizes online content such as flipped learning. HGU was able to respond quickly by establishing a digital education system in advance even when all classes were conducted online due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Director Chung-Rok Pang of HEDC expressed expectations for the development of a digital teaching-learning support system, saying, "Teaching-learning support programs can be implemented through new methods, creating learning effects just as much as face-to-face programs."
