Handong University (President Soon-Heung Chang) held the “2020 Social Creatinnovation Camp” for Handong University undergraduate and graduate students from the 29th to 30th of last month.

This camp was conducted as a pre-training of Social Creatinnovation Camps, which will be held in developing countries such as the Philippines, Laos, and Nepal as part of the Handong Global University-UNESCO UNITWIN joint training program.

Under the theme of ‘Disasters and Information', the 2020 Social Creatinnovation Camp aims to creatively and innovatively solve issues relevant to our current times such as epidemics like the Covid-19 epidemic, natural disasters including earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, and social disasters such as environmental pollution accidents.

Students from various departments, such as the School of Management and Economics, the School of Law, the School of ICT, and the School of Life Science, will form groups to brainstorm ideas for creative and innovative platform business, social campaigns, policy proposals, and legislation drafting to solve various social issues within the theme of 'Disasters and information'.

In this year’s camp, a panel was formed to review and provide feedback on the presentations given by each of the students’ groups, and thereby further develop and specify the details of their ideas. The panel consisted of Handong Global University’s Prof. Gi-Sun Yoo from the School of Management and Economics, Prof. Kook-woon Lee and Hae-shin Jo from the School of Law, Prof. Beung-duk Kang from the School of Counseling Psychology and Social Welfare, Prof. Woo-min Shim from Kyungin University and US attorney Chang-hwan Lee.

In accordance with the theme of 'Disasters and information', Handong Global University undergraduate and graduate students who participated in the camp presented and attracted attention to topics including social welfare platforms for the post-corona era, PTSD culture and psychological art therapy platforms. It also included partial revisions of the General Act on Disaster and Safety Management for Distributing False Facts in Disasters, revisions to the welfare laws for disabled persons to provide sign language interpretation services, and partial amendments to laws related to the improvement of epidemiological researchers’ work conditions and the prevention and management of infectious diseases. In this manner, various creative methods were proposed, ranging from problem recognition, setting, and solution resolution, for each topic.

“The importance of social innovation than can create social value and is sustainable is no longer a matter of choice, but has now become essential in this current era,” said Prof. Ki-sun Yoo of Handong University. "Everyone may come from a different major, but I believe that this camp provided an opportunity for everyone to learn many things.” In addition, Professor Kook-woon Lee said, “It was a short camp period, but I was delighted to see the students' thoughts and ideas develop. I look forward to further camps becoming a convergence camp where students majoring in business and law can have intense discussions and learning.”

Park Min, a student at Handong Global University’s General Graduate School of Law, expressed her feelings saying, “It was difficult to come up with creative ideas and specify them for social problems, but I was able to learn a lot. I hope that there will be many educational opportunities with intensive training in the future. Based on what I have learned, I hope to go to developing countries and collaborate well with local students.”

Students who showed excellence among the camp participants will go on to participate in local camps organized in developing countries as part of Handong University's UNITWIN project after the Covid-19 situation stabilizes, and will play a leading role in group activities with university students from partner universities.
