Handong Global University’s Chair Professor, Dr. Soon-Kwon Kim (Chairman of the International Corn Foundation) is promoting research on new varieties of corn in Pohang and Pyeongyang.

Dr. Soon-Kwon Kim is breeding 550 newly developed corn species at the Kangnaeng Research Institute of Eunsan Province, North Korea and Pyeongyang Mirim Agricultural Testing Laboratory for them to adapt to the three province’s climate of North Korea and northeastern China.

Following up on the 550 species, the Unification Corn Center located in Gohyeon-ri, Cheongha-myeon, Pohang City and Handong Global University Unification Farm are increasing the number of corn seeds adopted from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Dr. Soon-Kwon Kim said, "I hope through this research, it will not only resolve North Korea's food problems but also help North Korea become the world's top corn breeder. We hope that we can speed up the unification through corn research and support."

Dr. Soon-Kwon Kim has been breeding eco-friendly corn varieties in developed countries like the United States, international organizations in Africa, and in developing Asian countries for 53 years ever since the corn research started in the Rural Development Administration in 1969. He is committed to the research and study of corn and is developing high-quality, eco-friendly corns that are resistant to insect damage and adapt well to climate change through "Symbiosis Breeding" technology using quantitative genes.

Meanwhile, Dr. Soon-Kwon Kim plans to establish a branch of “Chinese Dr. Corn Seed Company”, a company originally founded in three northeastern provinces of China in 2008, in Sinuiju. With this, he is planning to explore the Chinese seed market even further.
