Handong Global University and Nepal Kathmandu Institute of Technology Hold an Online Public Seminar on Improving the Urban Environment

- Pohang and Seoul of South Korea, Kathmandu of Nepal, and more are sharing each country's overall urban conditions and strategies for improving the environment.

 

- Various lectures were conducted for the development of urban communities, including urban-style agricultural strategies applied by high-tech agricultural technology and projects to restore historical relics in urban areas.

Handong Global University (President Soon-Heung Chang) UNESCO UNITWIN* Enterprise Organization held an 'Online seminar on Improving Urban Environment' with Nepal's Kathmandu University of Technology from 17th to 19th of September, 2020.


The seminar was held for about 70 students from Nepal's Kathmandu University of Technology and Handong Global University, through, an online conference platform, ZOOM in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.


Ja-Moon Koo; Professor of School of Spatial Environmental System Engineering at Handong Global University, James Davis; Professor at Handong International Law School, Divashi; the researcher at POSTECH Institute of Design Intelligence, and Professors Moon Shin Donggol, Chritie Sereta and Mahima Sereta, from Department of Architecture at Nepal's Kathmandu University of Technology, approximately 10 experts attended the meeting to give lectures on various topics on urban conditions and strategies for improving the urban environment in each country.
 

Professor Ja-Moon Koo of Handong Global University introduced through the Pohang's Regeneration and New Deal Project lecture about the Pohang's Urban Regeneration issues and discussed the potential applicability in Nepal.

 

Professor Moon Shin Donggol of Nepal’s Kathmandu Institute of Technology presented about the historic site restoration of the city Krittipur (one of the ancient city of Nepal) project about the business of establishing a historical and cultural center, like Gyeongju.

 

In addition, various lectures were conducted on urban agricultural strategies through the application of high-tech agricultural technologies, and environmental improvement in illegal residential areas through researches of the Manohara slums.

Professor Ja-Moon Koo of Handong Global University said, The city we are in is formed by a mixture of diverse cultures and populations which is like a living organism-like community, and it is a very beneficial process to share various strategies of each country and city, and receive inspiration in the process of discovering urban development strategies and creative planning," He also said. "The various urban strategy cases of both countries presented at this seminar must have been very valuable to the students."


Pradan, President of Kathmandu University of Technology said, "This seminar was a very valuable opportunity for students of our school's architecture department to broaden their horizons through urban development cases in major Korean cities.' He also mentioned, "We hope that there will be continuous opportunities for educational cooperation to enhance the capacity of this school through knowledge exchange between the two universities."   


Handong Global University regularly interacts with Nepal, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Mongolia and is conducting joint research projects and symposiums for the sustainable development of the cooperating universities.

Also, to narrow the gap of knowledge and support self-sustainability of the developing nations, founded by UNESCO in 1992.
