- Urban architecture experts from five different universities from four countries of the U.S., Italy, Vietnam, and Korea attended as panels.
- Various lectures were conducted and innovative ideas were shared related to smart city models with self-driving vehicles and the reorganisation of the urban environment through traffic innovation.

On the 22nd of September, Handong Global University (President Soon-Heung Chang) hosted a webinar on prospects for future city towards smart city.
This webinar hosted around 600 students and workers in the areas of urban planning and architecture from all over the world, under the topic of ‘sustainable innovative smart city model for the future.’
Urban planning experts from five universities from four different countries participated as panels and conducted lectures on new models of smart cities in each research field. Below are the experts that participated:
- Dr. Trinh Tu Anh, the Director of Institute of Smart City and Management at University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
- Dr. Barbara E. A. Piga, Professor at the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies at Milano Technical University, Italy
- Michael Johnson, Principal of Urban Design Practice at a firm, Smithgroup, U.S.
- Dr. Deok-Soo Seo, Professor at the School of Spatial Environment System Engineering at Handong Global University, Republic of Korea
- Dr. Elena Marchigiani, Professor at the Department of Engineering and Architecture at University of Trieste, Italy
Professor Deok-Soo Seo of Handong Global University, presented about smart innovative city focused on mobility, and Professor Elena of University of Trieste, presented about the innovative model in traffic and the role of urban design for the enhancement of quality of life. Also, an in-depth discussion was conducted by the panels over the topic of 'value-oriented smart city development.'
Professor Tu Anh from University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, who led the webinar overall stated, “Smart city is a new alternative to respond to changes in the future society, that is coming with the Fourth Industrial Revolution with unpredictability.” He also said, “The demand for smart city will increase even more to protect citizens from sudden diseases like the COVID-19 Pandemic and to solve social problems.”
Michael, co-director of Smithgroup said, “At the centre of smart city, it is important to have creative designs of streets and open-spaces that can afford an innovative mobility traffic system.” He also emphasised saying, “It is extremely important for the workers in urban planning and architecture to carry their roles out.”
Professor Deok-Soo Seo of Handong Global University said, “Smart City is not simply a city full of self-driving vehicles and artificial intelligence based on ICT technology, but it is an opportunity that nurtures pre-existing values with the uniqueness of each community and country as well as provides a fresh perspective of urban issues that we have never been able to solve. Especially this seminar was a meaningful place for discussions to take place, that allowed many experts to discuss various perspectives of the smart city.”
Handong Global University is planning to intimately communicate with the international universities that participated in this webinar and cooperate through hosting international symposiums and conducting joint researches, etc.
Handong Global University also is the first hosting university of UNITWIN (University Twinning and Networking) programme of UNESCO. The University is pursuing sustainable development of developing countries by having intimate networks with numerous international universities and leading in the area of empowerment in higher education.
