- Co-Hosted Sustainable Mandalay Smart City Webinar with Mandalay Technological University in Myanmar and Seoul National University

- Hosted two seminars under the topic of sustainable developing countries smart city and developing countries’ urban problem solving

Handong Global University (President Soon-Heung Chang) UNESCO-UNITWIN Project hosted Mandalay Smart City Development Camp on the 16-18th of October in Gyeong-Ju and Mandalay, Myanmar.

 

 This camp was conducted in two aspects: Theses presentation seminar on sustainable developing countries’ smart city and solving urban problems of developing countries; and Mandalay Smart City Webinar.

 

 This webinar was conducted for 256 people in total, including one professor each from Mandalay Technological University, Handong Global University, and Seoul National University as panels. There also were special lectures under the topics of “Introduction to Mandalay City and its History,” “Smart City and Sustainable Mobility,” and “Smart City Design Trend.”

 

 Also, there were presentations of theses concerning the problems and the alternatives of smart city development in developing countries through introducing cases of world-widely known smart cities, their characteristics, and the researches of the participants.

Duk-Su, Seo, the HGU professor, who supervised this camp, said, “It was a meaningful time to think about various alternatives to convert developing countries’ cities into smart cities, through having webinar special lecture and discussion, and individual research and theses seminar. I hope the participants of this camp would become the leaders who suggest alternatives to the problems that developing cities face, solve the problems, and eventually lead the leap to smart cities.”

 

 

 Also, Su Su, professor of MTU, who participated as a panel to this webinar said, “We appreciate HGU for hosting this webinar. The Burmese students who participated in this webinar were able to expand their view over smart city issue. Through this, we hope the cooperation between the two schools may continue.”

HGU will strive to foster talented students for the smart city through hosting camps and conducting researches of joint papers with Mandalay Technological University, that co-hosted this webinar. 

 

*UNESCO UNITWIN (University Twinning and Networking) is a program where university from a developed nation form a network with universities of the developing nation to support education and research institutes of these universities. Also, to narrow the gap of knowledge and support self-sustainability of the developing nations, founded by UNESCO in 1992. Handong Global University was selected as the First UNITWIN Sponsor University in 2007.

 

* Besides this, Handong Global University was selected as the First Intern Exchange Agreement University in South Korea with OECD (2008), the Sponsoring University of UN ACADEMIC IMPACT (2011), Operating University of the UN Depository Library (2014), and the host institution of the UN NGO Conference (2016). Handong opened the UNAI Ban Ki-moon Institute for Global Education (IGE) in 2019, thereby speeding up the drive for internationalization.
