Ms. Soon-Hyang Oh (aged 88) is in the talk of the town for knitting clothes, sweaters, and mufflers for the international students of Handong each winter.
Not only does Ms. Soon-Hyang Oh make regular donations to Handong each semester, but she also has donated over 420 hand-knitted vests, cardigans, hats, and mufflers to the international students.
On the reason behind the donations, Ms. Oh said, “While I was making continued donations, I was hospitalized in 2010. Thinking of what I could do in my hospital bed, I thought of knitting.” She added, “I made knits, mufflers, sweaters, hats, and others, hoping that the international students from tropical countries would be able to adjust to the cold weather of Korea and continue focusing on their education.”
Lakshme Swarna, a junior from Malaysia in the School of Life Science who received her gift, said, “I was able to feel the love of the Knitting Grandma towards international students through her gifts of mufflers and hats.” She added, “I will become a person who can share the love that the Knitting Grandma shared with us to others as well.”
Ratsimbazafy Fenosoa, a junior from Madagascar in the School of Creative Convergence Education, said, “I’ve never felt as cold before I came to Korea and struggled to adjust to the cold weather each winter here.” She added, “I was able to feel the love of the Knitting Grandma through her gifts of hats and mufflers, and even when I go back home, I will not forget the love that I received in Korea.”
