From February first to the fifth, Handong Global University(President Soon-Heung Chang)’s UNESCO UNITWIN team hosted the ‘Startup Capacity Building Workshop for the Community Development in Kumi, Uganda, Africa’ in cooperation with Kumi University, Uganda and Food for the Hungry, an international relief and development NGO.
This workshop aimed to encourage entrepreneurship of young adults in the Mukongoro area and develop the local society by enlarging the residents’ income. It was conducted under the guidance of Professor Youn-Sik Han of the School of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, and Professor Hye-Gyu Lee of the School of Management and Economics.

35 Mukongoro young adults who participated in this workshop received entrepreneurship-related lectures such as Entrepreneurial Spirit and Mindset, Design Thinking, Prototype, and Design Canvas, and wrote business plans after conducting market research on the Kumi area.
Mukongoro young adults shaped their start-up business ideas in detail with mentoring and feedback from Handong student assistant researchers.
Perez, from the Food for the Hungry organization who participated as the workshop lecturer said, “Startup education is very meaningful and significant because it enlarges the residents’ income by encouraging small-size start-ups while also facilitating the people to have autonomy and proactiveness. The startup education that Handong Global University constantly provides will be the precious foundation for the development of the Kumi area in Uganda.”
Meanwhile, the lecturer of the workshop was a local who was previously trained by the education provided by HGU. Kumi University established its standing as the local centre institute after being provided with Handong Global University’s education and technology.
Even after this workshop, Handong Global University will continue to provide education and mentoring for the Mukongoro young adults to foster local leaders and develop education programs. By maintaining close relationships with local universities and education by, among others, commercializing prototypes after selecting outstanding start-up items, Handong Global University hopes to continue developing its educational programs.
