Handong Global University (President Soon-Heung Chang) held an "International Week for Regional Development" under the theme of "stay + vacation" at Handong Global University from March 1st, 2021 to March 5th, 2021.
The event was held to find new urban functions and roles as the tourism business stalled due to COVID-19, and the need for space in the city being emphasized due to social distancing.
The event was co-hosted by Handong Global University, Hasselt University in Belgium, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Ton Duc Thang University, Thailand Thammasat University, and Mandalay Technological University in Myanmar.
Eight teams were formed to explore strategies for new regional development, consisting of students and more than ten professors from participating universities, including Professor Deok-Soo Seo of School of Spatial Environment System Engineering and Emeritus Professor Ja-Mun Koo of Handong Global University.
Students at the event had time to build a network, learning from professors from various countries about post-COVID international development cooperation and the latest trends in regional development.
"In the time of COVID-19 where movement is limited, it is important to strive to make the city we live in into a restorable place, a place where people have abundant recovery and a leisurely life," said Els Hannes, a professor at the University of Hasselt in Belgium, explaining the purpose for the planning of the international week.
