The UNESCO Unitwin Business Association of Handong Global University (President Soon-Heung Chang) held a workshop to strengthen the local start-up capacity of international development cooperation from the 30th of April to the 1st of March.
This workshop invited field specialists affiliated with The Bridge (NGO) and conducted an education on socially innovative business start-up process in developing countries for 20 students of Handong Global University that will participate in the African Community Development Project.
Starting with cases of socially innovative start-ups in developing countries and their connections to SDGs, students received essential knowledge of field-oriented start-up project processes, such as the definition and analysis of social dilemmas in developing countries, interviews with interested parties, market research, solution generating process, and more.

Jin Hee-yeon, an undergraduate student who participated in the workshop, said, "Even though I had strong passions for helping developing countries that struggle with poverty and disease, I had difficulties because of vagueness in directionality and knowledge. However, I am very grateful to acquire specific information and knowledge through this education. Based on what we learned this time, I look forward in using it for a cooperative start-up project with Kumi University (Uganda) to produce good results."
Students who participated in the workshop will also be participating in start-up projects and studies for community development by teaming up with students from Kumi University and the University of Tanzania under the guidance of Professor Han Yoon-sik of the Department of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at Handong Global University.
Lecturer Hwang Jin-sol, CEO of The Bridge NGO, emphasized, "We hope that the young people of Korea will take interest in international development cooperation and foster a positive and responsible attitude as citizens of the world. In this COVID-19 situation, we are in desperate need for global partnership to cooperate with one another."
Meanwhile, Handong Global University's UNESCO Unitwin business start-up capacity strengthening program aims to find sustainable business models and foster talented entrepreneurs in developing the local economy by encouraging startups through education for African developing countries. In particular, Handong Global University is planning a community development start-up project through student exchanges with local universities this year.
