Handong International Law School (President Do Soung Choi), which has established itself as the cradle of cultivating American lawyers, held a ceremony to mark the 20th anniversary of its opening this year. On the 18th (Friday), the ceremony held at the Grand Hill Convention in Seoul was attended by 300 people, including Chairman of the Handong Global University Foundation, Jae Hoon Lee, President Do Soung Choi, current students and alumni, faculty members, and people from various legal profession.
Handong Global University established the first American-style 3-year law school (Handong International Law School) in 2002 with the goal of nurturing legal talents who will lead the 21st century internationalization and global era. Since its opening, it has produced 545 American lawyers, accounting for about 70% of all graduates.
Looking at the employment status of graduates, despite being certified as American lawyers, they continue to be active not only in overseas, but also in domestic law firms. This is because the demand for foreign law experts is steadily increasing due to the characteristics of Korean business, which has a high proportion of trade. Through the nation’s only American-style law school education, graduates are highly regarded for their understanding of American law and English proficiency, and due to the influence of law school’s academic tradition that emphasizes honesty and sincerity, they work in various fields, including major law firms, public institutions, and patent law firms.
Graduates are active not only in Korea, but also in many different countries such as the United States and the Middle East as a form of local corporations and overseas dispatches. And, in some cases they establish their own law firms. An example is the 3rd graduates of Handong International Law School, Jae Yoon Kim and Sang Ho Lee, established a patent law firm (NKL Law) in Virginia, USA.
Eric Enlow, Dean of Handong International Law School (Vice-President of the Globalization of Handong Global University), said, “I am grateful to many people, including the first president Young Gil Kim, who worked hard to establish our law school in the early days. We believe that our 20-year-old graduate school will play a more valuable role in the Korean legal community.”
At this event, which was attended by graduates and people from various fields at home and abroad, all guests had time to encourage each other to fulfill their role as light and salt in the world through the law and to fulfill their role in society.
