As part of the UNESCO UNITWIN project, Handong Global University (President Do Soung Choi) held startup training for African revival, in cooperation with St.Paul’s University in the Limur region of Kenya, from February 6th to 10th.
This event was held with the aim of fostering entrepreneurs who will lead sustainable development in Africa by combining business knowledge and IT technology, and more than 100 students selected from three campuses of St. Paul’s University in Kenya participated the training camp. Professor Sang Hwa Lee from the School of ICT Convergence and Entrepreneurship of Handong Global University, Professor Cham Gil Hong from the School of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering of Handong Global University and Professor Dong Wook Choi of Incheon National University participated as the main instructors and gave lectures on design thinking, business model, management principles, management trend, data analysis, website development, and business plan writing. The training was conducted for 5 days and students from St. Paul’s University formed groups to carry out various business and IT-related tasks, suggesting different entrepreneurial ideas, and were able to develop their business and IT-related capabilities.

James Combo, President of St.Paul University, said, “Based on the creativity and potential of students, I hope that entrepreneurs who will lead promising startups in Kenya will come out from our university on this opportunity and I expect all of you to do your best to fulfill the given task.”
John Rotich, a student who participated in the event, mentioned, “Students who were educated through this training camp have already created several websites and we expect positive changes such as the number of completed business plans after the training.” In addition, he expressed his gratitude for the special opportunity of startup education.
UNITWIN (UNIversity TWInning and Networking) is a program created by UNESCO in 1992 to help universities in developing countries reduce knowledge gaps and develop their independence through networks with universities in developed countries. In Korea, Handong Global University was designated as the first UNITWIN-hosted university in 2007.
In addition, Handong Global University provides educational internationalization through designation of the first OECD intern dispatched university (2008), designation of UN Academic Impact university (2011), designation of UN depository library operating university (2014), UN NGO conference hosting university (2016), and opening of UNAI Ban Ki Moon Global Education Center (2019).
