The late Eung Bok Jang, who passed away after donating all of his lifelong wealth to Handong Global University for the education of the next generation, received the Order of Civil Merit. This This award was made at the request of an anonymous informant to acknowledge his contribution after his death last year as news of his donation became known through the media. The Korean government is operating a "National Recommendation Award" system that rewards people with direct recommendations from the public to discover hidden contributors who have quietly devoted and made efforts throughout society.
Before his passing, the late Eung Bok Jang, who was honored with the Order of Civil Merit, donated his entire life's wealth of 11.3 billion won to Handong Global University in 2022. He requested that the wealth be used for the education of the next generation. Remarkably, he chose not to publicize the donation, believing that the right hand should not know what the left hand is doing.
His donation was only made known to the world after his passing. It is reported that the late Eung Bok Jang, who had a life philosophy of "Earning Money to Give Back," diligently saved his wealth through frugality and he was deeply moved by Handong Global University's educational philosophy of "Learn to Give Others" and decided to make the donation.
The late Eung Bok Jang, who passed away, was a doctor who studied medicine at Pyongyang Medical University. After coming to South Korea during the Korean War, he took care of the health of local residents from the 1960s when the medical infrastructure was poor. He willingly treated patients who knocked on the hospital door even in the middle of the night and sometimes did not accept medical fees. It is known that he used public transportation without owning a private car and that his entire family lived a modest lifestyle. His three children also willingly wrote documents renouncing inheritance, following their father's wishes.
The 12th National Recommendation Awards ceremony, held to honor outstanding citizens recommended by the public, took place on February 16th this year. In place of the late Eung Bok Jang, his son, Mr. Sung-il Jang, attended the award ceremony.
