In the contest to select the Korean representative for the 2022/2023 UIA Architecture & Children Golden Cubes Awards, Handong Global University won the Excellence Prize in the Institution field, for the Handong Global University-Heunghaeseobu Elementary School Workshop training program. Founded in 1948, UIA (Union Internationales des Architects) represents 1.3 million architects from over 100 countries around the world and is the only international association of architectural organizations recognized by the United Nations.
The UIA Golden Cubes Awards is an award system designed to discover and support individuals and organizations that develop and operate architectural education programs (schools, education, publications, media, etc.), to lay the foundation for architectural culture for children and young people. It targets children’s architecture programs around the world, and each UIA member country selects a representative program for each field through a public contest. Awards and exhibitions for the main prize are held at the UIA World Architecture Competition, which will be held in 2023.
Professor Yoo Song-hee of the School of Spatial Environment System Engineering at Handong Global University, who received the Award of Excellence this time, conducted a workshop with Heunghaeseobu Elementary School as part of contributing to the local community and improving social problems, through the 2020 Architectural Design 2 course. They designed, manufactured, and installed new spatial installations in elementary schools, providing a place of learning for children who dream of becoming future architects. Professor Yoo Song-hee expressed her feelings about the award, “I am happy that this course has been recognized for its expertise and had a good evaluation. I will continue to communicate closely with residents and do my best to exert a good influence through my professionalism”.
In particular, the Handong Global University–Heunghaeseobu Elementary School Workshop was well received not only by the judges but also by the participants of the awards ceremony and seminar events, for pursuing the value of communication and connection with the local community by ideating, planning, and making actual products together with students majoring in architecture and design from local colleges and students from elementary school.
