Handong Global University (President Dosoung Choi) has passed the preliminary selection for the "Glocal University 30 Project", which provides 100 billion KRW in support from the Ministry of Education for a period of five years.
The Ministry of Education and the Glocal University Committee announced on the 20th that a total of 15 innovative project proposals have been selected in the preliminary evaluation for the 2023 Glocal University designation.
Handong Global University presented its vision as "a university that leads the globalization of the local community through education that combines learning and sharing." It has outlined three major innovation strategies: △Education innovation that breaks down all boundaries △Regional innovation through the integration of academia and industry △Global innovation that supports the local community's global transformation.
Handong Global University plans to ensure unlimited freedom in student major selection by guaranteeing 100% student choice. It aims to integrate multiple faculties into a single college to maximize interdisciplinary education and promote convergence. By doing so, the university aims to enhance the effectiveness and quality of education, allowing students to explore diverse academic fields and develop a broader range of knowledge and skills.
Furthermore, based on the collaborative agreement signed with Minerva University in May, Handong Global University plans to develop integrated general education courses in order to pursue comprehensive, practical, and community-based education.
In addition, Handong Global University has put forth a strategy to strengthen High-Touch High-Tech (HTHT) education by expanding the development and implementation of AI-based personalized learning curricula, following the model of Arizona State University (ASU). This approach aims to provide tailored learning support that caters to the individual levels and characteristics of students.
Handong Global University has presented specific innovative initiatives, including the establishment of the "Ulleung Green Island Project," which focuses on the establishment of the Handong Ulleung Campus. They also aim to establish the Hwan-dong Coastal Region Innovation Center to identify and address community issues in locations such as Pohang, Yeongdeok, and Uljin. Additionally, they plan to develop an ESG startup innovation park by utilizing university-owned revenue-generating land. They will also collaborate with Pohang City, EcoPro, and POSCO Future M to build an ecosystem for the secondary battery industry and promote talent development. Furthermore, Handong Global University aims to secure 30 overseas bases for the Minerva-style global rotation program and lead the globalization of the region.
President Dosoung Choi of Handong Global University stated, "Since its establishment, Handong Global University has been practicing education innovation that breaks down boundaries and solves problems in the global field. We have been actively engaging with our university community and collaborating with relevant organizations such as local governments and industries to prepare concrete action plans to be designated as a future-oriented glocal university model." He further emphasized the university's commitment to actively communicate and collaborate with internal stakeholders and external organizations to achieve the final designation as a model for innovative glocal education.
The "Glocal University 30" project aims to foster 30 regional universities of global standards by 2026, with a maximum of 100 billion KRW of government funding allocated per university over a period of five years. Additionally, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province plans to provide an additional 100 billion KRW of local funding per university, based on collaboration between businesses, local governments, and universities.
The prospective designated universities are required to submit operational plans that further develop the tasks outlined in their innovation proposals, in collaboration with local governments and regional industries, by September. Based on the evaluation of these plans, approximately 10 Glocal Universities are expected to be finally selected by mid-October.
