Handong Global University (President Dosoung Choi) held the "Next Generation Entrepreneurship Training" in collaboration with Divine Word University in Papua New Guinea from June 26th to 30th, 2023.
The training program, targeting approximately 55 faculty members and students from Divine Word University in Papua New Guinea, was conducted by three professors from Handong Global University's School of Management and Economics (Hyun-Mo Sung, Geun-Bae Jang, Hohyun Kim) as instructors, with the assistance of six undergraduate students from Handong Global University (Hee Sung Seo, Ha Min Park, Jae Hoon Choi, Ji Hoon Lim, Si Eun Lim, Jae Sun Yoo) as teaching assistants. The program included education on entrepreneurial spirit, finance and accounting, and business model workshops conducted over four days, culminating in final presentations by the participants. Given the in-person nature of the training conducted after the COVID-19 pandemic, it held even greater significance.
Dr. Martin Daniel, the Head of the Department of Business Information at Divine Word University, emphasized the importance of instilling an entrepreneurial spirit in the students of Divine Word University in Papua New Guinea, where locally-operated businesses are scarce. He expressed his hope for closer ties between the two universities, with ongoing educational programs enhancing the capabilities of faculty members and students to contribute to the development of Papua New Guinea.
Cecil Kingsley, a second-year student majoring in Business and Accounting, who participated in the program, expressed his regret at the limited number of businesses in Papua New Guinea that create job opportunities. He stated that the program was a valuable investment for Papua New Guinean students, providing them with a platform to generate new ideas and execute them in the business world, particularly in cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset.
Jae Sun Yoo, an undergraduate student majoring in Visual and Product Design at Handong Global University, highlighted the significance of learning together with students from Papua New Guinea. She expressed her hope that this experience would plant seeds of positive change in the minds of the students who will lead the next generation.
Following the Next Generation Entrepreneurship Training, the Handong Institute for International Development Cooperation plans to continue mentoring Divine Word University students in entrepreneurship by leveraging the Handong Global University UNITWIN project, further accelerating the discovery of young entrepreneurs.
UNITWIN (UNIversity TWInning and Networking) is a program created by UNESCO in 1992 to help universities in developing countries reduce knowledge gaps and develop their independence through networks with universities in developed countries. In Korea, Handong Global University was designated as the first UNITWIN-hosted university in 2007.
In addition, Handong Global University provides educational internationalization through designation of the first OECD intern dispatched university (2008), designation of UN Academic Impact university (2011), designation of UN depository library operating university (2014), UN NGO conference hosting university (2016), and opening of UNAI Ban Ki Moon Global Education Center (2019).
