Handong Global University Hosts the 2nd KOICA-UPLB-IRRI International Agricultural Cooperation Research Conference

- As part of KOICA's Korean ODA initiative, an international conference on the application of genomics and bioinformatics in biology was organized.
-Handong Global University, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), and the University of the Philippines joined forces to discuss alternatives for food security in the era of climate change.

Handong Global University (President Dosoung Choi) hosted the 2nd KOICA-UPLB-IRRI International Agricultural Cooperation Research Conference in collaboration with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the University of the Philippines (UPLB), and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) on the 18th.

This international conference served as a platform for sharing innovative ideas and alternatives to enhance food security and promote sustainable development in the face of climate change. Discussions revolved around the innovative potential of advanced technologies in genomics and bioinformatics in the era of climate change, focusing on their impact on global food systems and food security. The conference featured lectures and open forums by leading domestic and international experts on three main topics: crop improvement, biotechnological applications for livestock immunity, and plant vaccine development.

President Dosoung Choi of Handong Global University expressed his sincere delight at hosting this international conference, stating, "I am truly pleased that Handong Global University is hosting this international conference. This opportunity to share the latest research on food improvement with world-renowned scholars from around the world is even more meaningful."

Governor Cheol Woo Lee of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province also addressed the audience, emphasizing the increasing demand for crop variety improvement in response to recent drastic climate changes. He expressed his hope that this conference would lead to greater internationalization of agricultural technology in Gyeongsangbuk-do and contribute significantly to food security in Asia and Africa, through collaboration among domestic and international institutions specializing in food security and crop research.

Dr. Sankalp Bhosale, Head of Rice Breeding Innovation at IRRI, who attended the conference, expressed gratitude for the support of the conference organizers, Handong Global University, IRRI, the University of the Philippines and Korean government agencies, and hoped that this conference would further strengthen the collaboration between the two countries.

During the conference, Handong Global University also signed a memorandum of understanding for research cooperation with the University of the Philippines to foster closer collaboration. Building on this cooperation, Handong Global University and IRRI plan to continue advancing and globalizing agricultural technology in Gyeongsangbuk-do and other international focal regions. It is expected that cooperation between the Philippines and Korea in the field of agricultural research will be further strengthened through this international conference.
